The pianist Earl Wild (1915 – 2010) was amongst the last of the great Romantic virtuosi, and these piano solo transcriptions showcase his talent. This reissue of a 1995 CD, originally issued by Sony Classical, is presented in HDCD state-of-the-art audiophile sound and features 13 tracks.
Throughout the course of his career, Earl Wild transcribed music from a wide range of composers. His arrangements are characterized by their affectionate, poetic phrasing and a sense of melodic ingenuity. The songs he chose to transcribe reflect the range of lyrical emotions found in Rachmaninoff’s song oeuvre and include such favorites as Daisies and Lilacs, Do Not Grieve, and Where Beauty Dwells.
In addition to the piano solos, Wild transcribed two orchestral works: The Fantasy on Porgy and Bess and the Piano Sonata by Gershwin. The former, of which he was the composer-arranger, is a brilliant reworking of the music from the stage show. In the latter, the piano evokes the sounds of the orchestra and is transformed into a dazzling concert work.
