IPS Gaurav Tripathi hails from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

In 2022, Gaurav Tripathi secured All India 226 rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his fourth attempt.

IPS Gaurav Tripathi, hailing from a middle-class background, fulfilled his dream of becoming an IAS-IPS by successfully cracking the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2022 on his fourth attempt. Gaurav’s journey to success is not a narrative of overnight accomplishment but a testament to his relentless determination and the pursuit of a dream. Born into an ordinary family with his father running a general store, Gaurav’s first encounter with the idea of Civil Services came through newspaper headlines, an unexpected turn that would alter the course of his life.

Gaurav’s academic journey commenced in Gorakhpur, where he received his early education. Later, he pursued a B.Tech from IIT Roorkee, but during his engineering days, he decided to shift gears toward civil services. This was the start of Gaurav’s focused preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Exam. He used NCERT books and carefully planned strategies, learning from successful candidates by reading their suggested books and taking thorough notes. “A single-minded approach to preparation, adherence to basic books recommended by toppers, and meticulous note-taking became my modus operandi,” Mr Tripathi shared with Indian Masterminds.

Gaurav Tripathi faced the interview round twice, yet his final selection could not happen. In 2020, he secured a position in PCS but chose not to join. Undeterred by setbacks, he adapted his strategy and continued his preparations. The triumph of success finally unfolded in his third attempt. Despite the hurdles of being in the Hindi medium, he encountered challenges particularly dealing with a shortage of study materials. In 2021, he learned from his failures and made a key decision to change his optional subject. He joined online coaching for UPSC Civil Services. The turning point came in 2022 when he secured All India 226 rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his fourth attempt.

In an interview, Gaurav mentioned that he’s not a bookworm. Instead, he found a unique way to connect with his studies by making vlogs. Apart from academics, he has a wide range of interests, including swimming and a deep love for music. Gaurav also runs a YouTube channel named UPSC Hindi4CS. In an interview, he openly shared that his initial motive for creating the channel was to earn money and not for social work. Nevertheless, Gaurav’s journey serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring UPSC candidates.
