A recent survey by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay’s official student media body, Insight, revealed that only a few students planned to pursue higher education. Specifically, 35 students intended to seek a master’s degree or PhD, while 5 aimed for a master’s in business administration. The remaining students planned to join the workforce directly, and most had already accepted job offers.

The survey revealed that many students have started using ChatGPT and online platforms to acquire new skills and enhance their portfolios before entering the job market. Out of the 272 students who responded to the question, “How did you generally study/learn new skills in the institute?”, 118 cited online platforms, while 65 mentioned ChatGPT. Only 9 students indicated they used library books—the traditional method of learning in university settings.

Among the 138 respondents to the question “In which situations have you not used ChatGPT ever?”, 89 stated they have not used it for resume-making, while only 46 said they have not used it for assignments and projects.

The survey, which gathered responses from 282 out of 2,400 graduating students, showed that 183 students used AI tools and online learning platforms to take additional courses outside their regular curriculum.

Out of 278 students who responded to a question about the importance of attending classes, 128 believed attendance was crucial if the professor and course were interesting. Meanwhile, 16 students felt they could succeed without attending classes, thanks to the abundance of online resources.

When asked about the new curriculum implemented by the IITB administration, 206 students believed it better aligns with industry needs, 162 said that Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are essential for everyone, while only 8 students preferred the old curriculum.
