The Class 8 Social Science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been criticised following a complaint from a former member of Jaisalmer’s royal family about a historical inaccuracy in one of its maps.
On Monday evening, Chaitanya Raj Singh, a member of Jaisalmer’s erstwhile royal family, used the social media platform ‘X’ to criticise the map on page 71 of Unit 3 in the NCERT textbook. He stated that the map inaccurately depicts Jaisalmer as part of the historical Maratha Empire, calling the claim “factless, historically misleading, and seriously objectionable.”
Singh emphasised that such inaccuracies in educational materials undermine the credibility of national institutions and dishonour the legacy of those who defended the state’s sovereignty and pride through generations.
]The map shown in the NCERT Social Science textbook for Class 8 (Unit 3, page number 71) depicts Jaisalmer as a part of the then Maratha Empire, which is historically misleading, factually baseless, and deeply objectionable. Such unverified and historically unsubstantiated information not only raises questions about the credibility of institutions like NCERT but also hurts our glorious history and public sentiments,” he posted on X.
“This is not just a matter of factual correction but is connected to our historical dignity, self-respect, and the integrity of the national curriculum. Prompt and concrete action is expected on this matter,” he added.

Singh has called for an immediate correction and appealed to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to take prompt action, stating that the error disrespects the dignity and historical truth of the Jaisalmer state. He emphasised that Jaisalmer, founded in 1178 CE by Rawal Jaisal of the Bhati clan, has no recorded history of Maratha control, taxation, or invasion. Singh noted that even the Mughals were unable to conquer Jaisalmer, which remained an independent princely state for centuries before integrating into the Indian Republic after independence.
