If you’ve ever dutifully shampooed your hair only to be met with greasy roots and flaky strands post-shower, you feel my pain. I hate the feeling of oily hair and itchy dandruff, so whenever shampoo day fails to actually clean my hair, I’m equal parts frustrated and uncomfortable.
Recently, I found myself dealing with more scalp buildup and flakiness than normal and decided I needed to bring in extra reinforcement, so to speak. On the advice of the internet and TikTok, I decided to try out a shampoo scrubber and scalp massager, which reviewers describe as “absolutely worth it” and has “enriched my time in the shower.” I figured I had nothing to lose — and I doubted so many reviewers could really be wrong. I’m happy to report: It did the trick. And you can grab one on sale right now for only $8 if you’re a Prime member.
Its silicone bristles are gentle on the scalp — including particularly sensitive scalps, according to reviewers — while getting deep into hair’s roots to cleanse grease, buildup and flakes. I find that the scrubber is much better at cleaning my hair than when I just use my fingers to massage my shampoo in: Its flexible, evenly spaced bristles tackle dirt and dandruff the way only a specially designed tool can, plus I’m able to scrub for longer since my hands don’t get tired, leaving my roots extra (blissfully) clean. This is probably also thanks to the tool’s ergonomic design, which makes holding the scrubber actually comfortable.
Experts also approve of the benefits of a scrubber like this one. Los Angeles-based trichologist Anna Asarte previously told HuffPost that a scalp massage can actually have an impact on your scalp’s health, helping “stimulate blood flow and nourish the hair follicles” — and mentioned that a scalp brush with soft, rounded bristles like this one could do the trick. (Your fingertips can also suffice.)
Best of all, this is a truly quick fix; the scrubber adds only about 10 seconds to my shower routine. This is especially great since I find that whenever I do skip this 10-second step, I’m more prone to flakiness and greasy buildup. It’s pretty easy to convince myself to stick to this step, since I gain no time — only oiliness and dandruff — by skipping it.
I would also be remiss not to mention the sweet massage this scrubber provides. Its gentle silicone bristles massage hair’s roots the way you’ll only get at a salon. Reviewers love this feature, saying it’s soothing and feels amazing, plus helps relieve itchiness.
I use mine on wet hair, but you can also use it on dry hair to help redistribute oils and soothe itchiness. It’s designed for all hair lengths and hair types, including thick and thin strands, long and short cuts and straight hair and curls.
“I love that this is all one piece. I bought a hard plastic once before this and the section holding the bristles disconnected from the body/handle and it was really gross inside from humidity buildup. Plus the scrubbers are firm enough to help but they don’t hurt. Great value for the price. Seems like it will last a long time.” —Jess
“Is it just me? I can’t stand influencers. But on a journey to find a way to promote my hair regrowth, I found an influencer who used this as part of their hair routine. (Actually it wasn’t this brand, just similar) I have been using this item for about a month now when I’m in the shower. I have super long semi-thick hair, and I use this item on my scalp once I’ve shampooed. The feeling is sensational and I find it helps with the lathering. In short, it’s enriched my time in the shower. I can’t comment on possibilities with scalp exfoliation or hair regrowth, but I can simply say that I’m glad I own this little gadget and I would recommend it.” — Ava Wise
“I was super skeptical about this when it was first recommended to me. I’m so glad I tried it tho. Trying to clean your scalp with your nails just doesn’t come close to this. I shampoo only once a week, but still scrub my scalp daily. Using this is an absolute game changer, because it’s almost like it exfoliates the hair itself, as well as your scalp. My finger tips don’t get tired and my scalp feels cleaner even with just water. I will say that I love heavy pressure when cleaning my scalp, so it does make it a bit tender after. You can always adjust the amount of pressure tho to suit your needs and preferences. My mom actually recommended it to me, and she has a /very/ sensitive scalp. Don’t let my review keep you from using it if yours is also sensitive. I’ve been using it for probably a couple of months, so I can’t speak for long term durability (especially since I use a lot of pressure). I will say it does look and feel very well made, fits wonderfully in your hand, and is molded to dry without concerns. (The inside is domed, and can hang with the strap)” — Pooch The Cat
“I don’t use shampoo, I use conditioning cleanser (cowash) and it’s really a challenge getting that through my hair. It takes a lot of work! Unlike shampoo, conditioning cleansers are like lotion and you have to work it through the hair and kinda scrub the scalp, then add some water and “lather” so to speak, and again work it around… look, I’m lazy af in the shower and I just don’t want to do that much WORK! Truthfully, I have arthritis in my hands so it really is a bit challenging and I dread it.
This little thing is amazing. It does the work for me and it feels AMAZING on my scalp. I mean.. it’s such a pleasure to use this little guy!! It’s gently stimulating to my scalp and my hair is far cleaner than when I do it with my fingers. I’ve had it for a while and still, every time I use it I mentally worship it. Best thing in the shower since I had a man in there with me.” — AnnieChiTown
